Letters to brother John back in Rushville discuss recruiting for the Army, news of battles, work at the post office, family news, including "cousin John" and the end of his term as post master and three members of the Scripps family on furlough after being held at Andersonville. Also discusses some activities in Chicago such as the "beer garden" near the army camp where the soldiers relax and sing, attending the theatre and the celebration after the fall of Richmond.
